Disney’s ‘Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure’ to Premiere at United Nations

Headquarters, with Tinker Bell to be named ‘Honorary Ambassador of Green’

The world premiere of the Walt Disney animated film, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, will take place on Sunday, 25 October, at 3 p.m., in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

Prior to the screening, Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will name Tinker Bell the “Honorary Ambassador of Green” to help promote environmental awareness among children.  Among those attending the event will be Tinker Bell Director Klay Hall, Producer Sean Lurie and cast members Mae Whitman (Tinker Bell) and Raven Symoné (Iridessa).

The event is intended to promote environmental awareness in the lead-up to the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change.  Nine out of every ten natural disasters are climate related with rising temperatures and more frequent floods, droughts and storms affecting millions of people’s lives.  The United Nations is leading the “Seal the Deal” campaign to garner public support and encourage world leaders to reach an effective climate agreement when they meet in Copenhagen from 7 to 18 December 2009.

Protecting the environment is an underlying theme of the Tinker Bell movies.  The Walt Disney Company uses its storytelling to inspire a love of nature and spirit of conservation in its audience.  Tinker Bell lives in harmony with the environment and her popularity plays a key role in inspiring children.

In Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, to be released on Blu-ray and DVD on 27 October, Tinker Bell’s greatest adventure takes place in autumn, as the fairies in Pixie Hollow are busy changing the colours of the leaves, tending to pumpkin patches and helping geese fly south for the winter.  When Tinker Bell accidentally puts all of Pixie Hollow in jeopardy, she must venture out on a secret quest to set things right.

“We’re delighted Tinker Bell has agreed to be our Honorary Ambassador of Green,” said Mr. Akasaka.  “This beloved animated character can help us inspire kids and their parents to nurture nature and do what they can to take care of the environment.”

The premiere of Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is being hosted by the United Nations Department of Public Information as part of the Secretary-General’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative, which is the first point of entry in the United Nations for the film and television industry.  It acts as a liaison between the United Nations and producers, directors, writers and new media professionals seeking a working relationship with the United Nations.  Visit www.un.org/en/creative to learn more.
