PARALLEL EVENTS OF UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND DURING WOMEN’S COMMISSION
WILL HIGHLIGHT NEED TO SHARE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS, HEALTH
“The equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS,” will be the focus of the Commission on the Status of Women, which will convene at Headquarters from 2 to 13 March. During the gathering, representatives of countries, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations from all regions will share lessons and good practices related to the subject, and suggest additional key initiatives to enhance responsibility sharing. The gathering will also address the implementation of the commitments made at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing.
As part of the event, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and its partners will organize a number of activities to underline the importance of sharing responsibilities between women and men, which would promote women’s equality and human rights.
On Tuesday, 3 March, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Church Center (777 United Nations Plaza), 11th floor, UNFPA, in collaboration with the Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE), will convene a side event panel discussion: “Women and Men Sharing Responsibility in Prevention: A discussion on Female and Male Condoms”.
Also on Tuesday, another side event panel discussion will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in theDag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium. Entitled “Shared Responsibility between Women and Men to Advance Sexual and Reproductive Health” and led by UNFPA, the event will include representatives of Member States and civil society, including the Microcredit Summit Campaign, the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS.
On Wednesday, 4 March at 3 p.m. in Conference Room 2, UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid will address the Commission plenary on the linkages between the fifteenth anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action.
Also on Wednesday, from 3 to 5 p.m. in theDag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium will be a side event panel discussion: “Equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS”. The event is organized by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and its co-sponsors, including UNFPA, as well as civil society organizations.
On Thursday, 5 March, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kaye Playhouse, 695 Park Avenue (at 68th Street), there will be a film screening of A Powerful Noise. The documentary about women’s empowerment portrays the lives of three women from Mali, Bosnia and Viet Nam. The event will include a panel discussion.
On Thursday, 12 March, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Conference Room 2, UNFPA Executive Coordinator for Global Public Health, Dr. Hedia Belhadj, will join a plenary panel discussion on“Gender Perspectives on Global Public Health: Implementing the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals”.
UNFPA will also have a booth offering relevant publications and material on the Fund’s work to promote women’s health and empowerment.
