New Permanent Representative of Germany Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, Peter Wittig, presented his credentials today to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Wittig headed the Federal Foreign Office Directorate-General for the United Nations and Global Issues in Berlin (2006-2009) and served as deputy head (2002-2006).
Having joined the German Foreign Service in 1982, he has served in Madrid, Spain; at his country’s United Nations Permanent Mission in New York; as Private Secretary to the Foreign Minister in Bonn; and as Ambassador to Lebanon. As Ambassador to Cyprus, he also acted as Special Envoy of the German Government for the Cyprus Question.
After reading history, political science and law at Bonn, Freiburg, Canterbury and Oxford Universities, Mr. Wittig taught for three years as an Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg.
Born on 11 August 1954 in Bonn, he is married with four children.
