New Permanent Representative of Ecuador Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, Francisco Carrión Mena, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

He was Foreign Minister of Ecuador from 2005 to 2007, later becoming personal representative of the country’s President to the Yasuni-ITT Initiative, a position he held until his current appointment.

From 2000 to 2005, he served as the Ecuador’s Ambassador to Spain, having been his country’s Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs from 1998 to 2000.  He was Under Secretary of the Department of National Sovereignty of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1998, after serving since 1991 and as Ecuador’s Chargé d’Affaires a.i. in London. 

From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Carrión was Advisor and Diplomatic Coordinator of the President of the Republic in Quito.  Before that, he served as First Secretary and Counsellor of the Embassy of Ecuador in Paris from 1982 to 1988.

He holds a doctorate degree in international sciences from Central University of Ecuador in Quito (1978), following a bachelor’s degree in public and social sciences from the university’s Law Faculty in 1974.

Born in Quito on 8 April 1953, Mr. Carrión is married with two children.
