Delegation Presents Appointment Letter

The new head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) delegation to the United Nations, Marwan Jilani, presented his letter of appointment today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.


Prior to his appointment, Mr. Jilani served as the Head of the Middle East and North Africa Zone Office of the IFRC, which is based in Amman, Jordan.


Mr. Jilani has a long career with wide-ranging working experience in a number of fields, including humanitarian and development assistance, diplomacy, governmental and public fields, as well as working with non-governmental organizations.


In the Middle East region, Mr. Jilani worked with the Palestine Red Crescent Society; the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); Save the Children; and the Academy for Educational Development (AED).  He also served as a diplomat for the Palestinian Authority, serving as the Deputy Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations in New York, and later took up the position of the Assistant Minister for Multilateral Affairs at the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ramallah.


Mr. Jilani holds two masters’ degrees, the first in Diplomacy from the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta; the second in Government and Politics, with a major in International Relations, from St. John’s University in New York.  As an undergraduate, he studied engineering in the United Kingdom.


Mr. Jilani was born on 3 November 1960 in Amman, Jordan.
