Mourad Benmehidi of Algeria Chair of Sixth Committee

 

Mourad Benmehidi, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, was elected Chair of the Sixth Committee (Legal) on 10 June.  (See Press Release GA/10831.)

Mr. Benmehidi was appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations on August 25 2008, having served as Deputy Permanent Representative since 2003, a period in which he represented his country on the Security Council in 2004 and 2005.  From 2001 to 2003, he was Minister-Counsellor at the Algerian Mission.

From 1997 to 2001, Mr. Benmehidi was Deputy Director for Northern Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers, having held the same rank, with responsibility for Eastern Asia, in 1995 and 1996.  He has served as Counsellor at the Algerian embassy in Bonn, Germany, from 1991 to 1995.

Responsible for human rights matters in the Department of Political Affairs between 1988 and 1991, Mr. Benmehidi has previously held the post of Secretary at Algeria’s embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, from 1986 to 1988.  From 1982 to 1986, he oversaw South-South cooperation and inter-regional conferences at the Department of International Organizations.

Mr. Benmehidi received a law degree from the University of Algiers in 1976.

Born on 1 February 1953 in Annaba, Algeria, he is married and has three children.
