New Permanent Representative of Netherlands Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the United Nations, Herman Schaper, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

From 2005 until taking up his new position, Mr. Schaper was his country’s Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council, governing body of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Between 2001 and 2005, he was Deputy Director-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, having previously served as Director of the European Department, the Security Policy Department, as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO.

From 1981 to 1982 Mr. Schaper was a Member of Parliament, having previously worked as a researcher at the Netherlands Society for International Affairs.  He has published a dozen articles on Dutch foreign policy, European security and transatlantic relations.

Mr. Schaper holds a degree in modern history from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and a master’s in international relations from the University of Virginia in the United States.

Born in 1949, he is married and has three children.
