New Permanent Representative of france Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Gérard Araud, presented his credentials today to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Until his appointment, Mr. Araud was Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and Director General for Political Affairs and Security since 2006.

From 2003 to 2006, he served as France’s Ambassador to Israel.  From 2000 to 2003, he was Director for Strategic Affairs, Security and Disarmament at the French Foreign Ministry.  Between 1995 and 2000, Mr. Araud was Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, and from 1993 until 1995, he served as Diplomatic Advisor in the Office of the Minister of Defence.  From 1991 to 1993, he headed the Bureau for European Community Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Directorate of Economic and Financial Affairs).

From 1987 to 1991 Mr. Araud served as Second Counsellor at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.; having served on the Policy Planning Staff of the Foreign Ministry from 1984 to 1987; and as First Secretary at his country’s Embassy in Tele Aviv, Israel from 1982 to 1984.

Born on February 20, 1953, in Marseille, Mr. Araud graduated from Ecole Polytechnique in 1973; Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris in 1978; Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Economique, also in 1978; and Ecole Nationale d’Administration in 1982.
