Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GEORGIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, Alexander Lomaia, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Until his appointment, Mr. Lomaia held the post of National Security Adviser to the President of Georgia beginning in 2007, prior to which he was Minister for Education and Science from 2004 to 2007.

Mr. Lomaia served as Executive Director of the Open Society Georgia Foundation, known as the Soros Foundation, from 2003 to 2004, and as Regional Director for the Democracy Coalition Project in the territories of the former Soviet Union, based in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, from 2002 to 2003.

Between 1995 and 2002, he worked for the Georgia Office of the Eurasia Foundation, first as a Programme Officer and then as Country Director.  He was International Affairs Editor of the Tbilisi-based newspaper Argumenti between January and July 1995 and Secretary-General of the Christian Democratic Union from 1993 to 1995.

Mr. Lomaia’s previous diplomatic experience included service as Ambassador to Russia from July to September 1991, and as Deputy Ambassador between March and July of the same year.

The holder of two engineering degrees, including a Ph.D, Mr. Lomaia was educated at the Moscow Construction Engineering Institute and the Georgia Technical University in Tbilisi.

Born on 23 July 1963 in Tbilisi, he is married and has two sons.
