NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BHUTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Bhutan to the United Nations, Lhatu Wangchuk, today presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Before his appointment, Mr. Wangchuk held the post of Director-General of the Department of Tourism in Bhutan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs since 2002. From 1998 to 2001, he was his country’s ambassador to Bangladesh.
From 1992 until 1998, Mr. Wangchuk served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, until 1994 as Chief of Protocol and from then on as Director/Acting Foreign Secretary. Before that, from 1989 on, he was Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Wangchuk served as Secretary of the National Urban Development Corporation from 1983 to 1988 and as Deputy Secretary from 1981 until 1983. From 1979 until 1981 he was Second Secretary of the Bhutanese embassy in New Delhi, India, and from 1976 until 1979 he served as Third Secretary at his country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. Earlier positions in the Foreign Affairs Department included accountant (1972-1974), attaché (1974-1975) and Under-Secretary (1975-1976).
Born on 25 December 1951 in Rongthung, Trashigang, in Bhutan, Mr. Wangchuk holds a bachelor’s degree in political sciences, economics and sociology.
