Training workshop organized by United Nations, africa human resources managers
plans launch of network to strengthen capacity development
Public administration specialists and professionals from more than 30 African countries will meet from 23 to 27 February in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, to discuss how strengthening public sector human-resources management could help achieve internationally agreed development targets, including the Millennium Development Goals.
The training workshop will bring together human resource managers in the public sector in Africa, trainers in management development institutes, public service commissions and other appointing authorities to enhance their knowledge, skills and networks. Participants will share information and experiences on how human resource managers engage in the formulation of policies and strategies for human-resources development in the public service.
The workshop will also be used as a launching pad for the African Human Resources Management Network ‑- APS-HRMnet, which aims to sustain capacity development by institutionalizing professional management of human resources in the public sector in Africa. The idea of an African network was first broached at the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR) Conference held in April 2007 in South Africa.
The launch of APS-HRMnet will be the culmination of efforts spurred by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Africa Association for Public Administration and Management, and eight African countries: Ethiopia; Kenya; Lesotho; Malawi; South Africa; Swaziland; United Republic of Tanzania; and Uganda.
The workshop is organized by the Division for Public Administration and Development Management of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country offices in Africa and the Commonwealth Secretariat in London supplemented the Department’s efforts by financing some of the participants.
Attending the workshop will be human resources managers from Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda. Representatives from the African Association for Public Administration and Management, the International Public Management Association for Human Resources, and the Africa Management Development Institutes Network will also be in attendance. They will be joined by Ministers responsible for public service in the United Republic of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
