to enhance Effective negotiations in multilateral conferences

NEW YORK, 25 February (UNITAR) -- On 25 to 27 February, at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is joining forces with the Olof Palme Memorial Fund to offer a workshop on “Effective Negotiation in Multilateral Conferences”.

Participants will receive training from top negotiation experts on effective negotiation skills in multilateral conferences.  They will also learn first-hand from experienced diplomats and international civil servants who have successfully negotiated agreements in the peace and security, as well as social and economic, spheres.  Speakers will include Pierre Schori, Director-General of FRIDE (Fundación para las Relaciones Internacionales y el Diálogo Exterior) and former Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, and Kimberly Gamble-Payne of the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The facilitator for the workshop is Brook Boyer, Manager of UNITAR’s multilateral diplomacy programme and experienced trainer on negotiations.  A high-level round table of ambassadors to the United Nations will further provide personal insights on the challenges that go with the day-in and day-out consultations and negotiations at United Nations Headquarters.

This event, though open to the entire diplomatic community in New York, is primarily focused on assisting developing countries, and brings together more than 40 participants from the diplomatic community.  (Registration has been closed.)

This workshop is the second workshop in the “Negotiation Series”.  A third workshop of this series will take place in fall 2008.  Additional information can be accessed at www.unitarny.org.
