SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES LAW ALLOWING JAPAN TO CONTINUE SUPPORT IN AFGHANISTAN

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General notes the challenges that Afghanistan and its international partners are facing and is thankful to all those Member States contributing troops and assets to the International Security Assistance Force and other international forces in Afghanistan, which, together with Afghan security forces, are supporting the efforts of the Government of Afghanistan to bring security and development to its people.  In this context, he welcomes the adoption by the Parliament of Japan, on 12 December, of the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law, which allows Japan to continue for a further year its activities in support of international operations in Afghanistan.
