SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES INTENTION OF SUDAN’S NATIONAL
UNITY GOVERNMENT TO PROCEED WITH NATIONAL CENSUS
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General welcomes the intention of the Government of National Unity to proceed with the holding of the national census, beginning on 22 April. The census constitutes an important milestone in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The Secretary-General expresses the hope that the census will not be further delayed, as it could have considerable political and financial implications. The Sudanese people, with the assistance of the international community, have invested much in the preparation of the census and look forward to a full and peaceful enumeration process.
