Secretary-General appoints takahisa Kawakami of japan deputy special

representative for security sector support in Timor-Leste

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today announced the appointment of Takahisa Kawakami of Japan as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Security Sector Support and Rule of Law, United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT).

Mr. Kawakami has had a distinguished career with the United Nations, both in the field and at Headquarters, and exposure to many of the issues and challenges under the Deputy Special Representative’s purview.  He earlier served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

He currently holds the position of Chief of Staff in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and has also served with the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) in 1992-1993.  He was posted to the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York from 1987 to 1991 and 2003 to 2007 and served with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at United Nations Headquarters from 1995 to 2000.

Mr. Kawakami holds a degree in political science from Waseda University in Tokyo.  He was born in 1950 in Hamamatsu City, Japan.  Mr. Kawakami is married and has one daughter.
