SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS WARREN SACH of UNITED KINGDOM AS ASSISTANT

SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR CENTRAL SUPPORT SERVICES

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Warren Sach of the United Kingdom as Assistant Secretary-General for Central Support Services.

The Secretary-General recognizes Mr. Sach’s dedicated service as Assistant Secretary-General and Controller.  He appreciates the strong sense of commitment and professionalism shown consistently by Mr. Sach in the fulfilment of his responsibilities.

As the new Assistant Secretary-General for Central Support Services, Mr. Sach will be responsible, inter alia, for procurement, which has expanded greatly in view of the increased number of United Nations operations in many parts of the world.  Mr. Sach will also continue in his role as Representative of the Secretary-General for Pension Fund investments.

Prior to his appointment as Controller in 2005, Mr. Sach served as Director and Deputy Director of the Programme Planning and Budget Division.  Prior to that, he was the Chief of the Salaries and Allowance Division of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) for seven years.  From May 1979 to October 1988, he served in the Budget Division, first as a Budget Officer and later as Chief of the Data Analysis and Systems Control Unit.

From May 1974, Mr. Sach served first as a Recruitment Officer and later as a Budget Officer at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.  He had earlier served as a Junior Professional Officer with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kenya between October 1968 and September 1970.

Mr. Sach was born in 1946 in Essex, England.  He was educated at University College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied first economics and then development economics, respectively.
