SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JANE HOLL LUTE OF UNITED STATES
AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR PEACEBUILDING SUPPORT
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Jane Holl Lute of the United States as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, to replace Carolyn McAskie.
The Secretary-General is grateful for Ms. McAskie’s dedicated service in establishing the peacebuilding architecture since the creation of the Peacebuilding Support Office in 2006 and her leadership, which contributed greatly to the achievement of its goals.
Ms. Holl Lute currently serves as Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Field Support. She joined the United Nations in August 2003 as Assistant Secretary-General for Mission Support in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. She led the creation of the Department of Field Support as Officer-in-Charge during the start-up period of the Department, from 2007 until May 2008. Ms. Holl Lute’s background puts her in a unique position to ensure that the Peacebuilding Support Office will continue to grow in addressing the challenges of a convenor within the United Nations system, drawing on development, security, political, humanitarian and human rights actors in support of the recently established Peacebuilding Commission, in managing the expansion of the Peacebuilding Fund and supporting the Secretary-General in the United Nations efforts in countries coming out of conflict.
Before joining the United Nations, Ms. Holl Lute was Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund, the entities established to administer Ted Turner’s $1 billion contribution to support the goals of the United Nations.
From 1994 to 1999, Ms. Holl Lute headed the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict and was a senior public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. From 1991 to 1994 she was Director of European Affairs in the National Security Council staff at the White House. Before that she had a distinguished career in the United States Army.
She has a Doctor of Philosophy in political science from Stanford University, and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University.
Born in 1956, Ms. Holl Lute is married and has three daughters.
