SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS MARIO SÁNCHEZ DEBERNARDI OF PERU AS FORCE
COMMANDER OF UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING FORCE IN CYPRUS
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Rear Admiral Mario Sánchez Debernardi of Peru as Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Admiral Sánchez Debernardi replaces Major General Rafael Barni of Argentina.
Prior to his current appointment, Admiral Sánchez Debernardi was the Director for Policy and Strategy at the Peruvian Ministry of Defence. During his distinguished military career, he has served in a variety of functions in the Peruvian Marine Forces and the Peruvian Joint Forces Command. Admiral Sánchez Debernardi also served as a military monitor with the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) in Namibia from 1989 to 1990.
Born in 1958, he is married and has two children.
