Security Council press statement on Darfur attack

The following Security Council press statement on the attack against African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) staff in Darfur was read out today by Council President Le Luong Minh (Viet Nam):

The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack of 8 July on a UNAMID military and police convoy in Darfur, which resulted in 7 deaths and a further 22 personnel being wounded.  The attack was the most severe on UNAMID since its deployment.

The members of the Council stress that any attack or threat against UNAMID is unacceptable, and demand that there be no further attacks.

The members of the Council express their deep condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity to UNAMID staff.

The members of the Council call for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The members of the Council look forward to a further briefing on the matter.
