SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON LEBANON
The following Security Council press statement was issued yesterday by Council President Giadalla A. Ettalhi ( Libya):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Beirut on 25 January 2008, which killed Captain Wissam Eid of the Lebanese Internal Security Forces and killed and injured several others.
They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Lebanon.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their condemnation of all targeted assassinations of Lebanese leaders, particularly since October 2004, and demanded an immediate end to the continuous use of intimidation and violence against Lebanese officials and institutions, in this case the Internal Security Forces.
The members of the Security Council stressed that it is of the highest importance that the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this heinous crime are brought to justice, and expressed their determination to support the efforts and commitment of the Government of Lebanon to this end. They also emphasized the need to put an end to impunity in Lebanon.
They stressed the importance of the unity of all the Lebanese people and of political dialogue. They reiterated their strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and political independence of Lebanon.
