HEAD OF UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO RETIRE IN JUNE 2009

Kenneth Wrye, Head of School at the United Nations International School (UNIS) in New York announced his decision to retire in June 2009 in a letter sent to the UNIS school community on 18 March.  Mr. Wrye has served as Head of School at UNIS since 1998.

Satya Nandan, Chair of the UNIS Board of Trustees, stated that “the Board has reluctantly taken note of Mr. Wrye’s decision to retire and expresses sincere gratitude to Mr. Wrye for his outstanding service to the School”.  He went on to say that Mr. Wrye’s leadership has been instrumental in furthering UNIS’ mission of “providing an international education that promotes the appreciation of the diversity of persons and cultures through a global curriculum based on the ideals of the United Nations Charter”.

UNIS is a K-12, coeducational day school serving 1,520 students on campuses in Manhattan and Queens, in New York City.  UNIS students represent 120 countries and speak more than 85 languages as their mother tongues.  The faculty and staff come from over 70 countries.  The rigorous academic programme, based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, includes a strong emphasis on community service, physical education and appreciation of the arts.  UNIS graduates have an exceptional record of admissions into the foremost colleges and universities worldwide.

At the end of the next school year, UNIS will have celebrated its sixty-first year and launched the UNIS Capital Master Plan, involving major renovations on the Manhattan and Queens campuses, a capital campaign to raise $40 million and the implementation of a new strategic plan.

The Board of Trustees has initiated a search for a new Head of School to take office in July 2009.  Persons interested in learning more about the opportunity to serve as the next Head of UNIS are invited to contact Jim Maggart at jmaggart@educatorscollaborative.com.
