special decolonization committee decides to hold 2008 pacific regional seminar


in bandung, indonesia, 14 to 16 may


The Special Decolonization Committee decided this morning that its 2008 Pacific Regional Seminar would be held in the Indonesian city of Bandung from 14 to 16 May.


The Congo, Ethiopia, Syria, India, Cuba, Dominica and the Russian Federation would represent the body at the Seminar, according to the decision of the body formally known as the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.


Marty Natalegawa of Indonesia, Chairman of the Special Committee, said that, as in the past, the Seminar would celebrate the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories.


Also this morning, the Special Committee decided to approve a list of experts and non-Governmental and civil society organizations, to be finalized by the Chair.  Also approved were the guidelines and rules of procedure, including the agenda for the Seminar, as contained in document A/AC.109/2008/5.


Among other procedural matters during the meeting, the Special Committee considered its revised schedule for the coming months.


The Congo’s representative thanked the Chairman for his country’s hosting of the Seminar while Dominica’s representative spoke on procedural matters.


The Special Decolonization Committee will meet again at a date and time to be announced.
