NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PORTUGAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Portugal to the United Nations, José Filipe Mendes Moraes Cabral, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Cabral was his country’s Ambassador to Spain since 2004. From 2001 to 2004, he served as Chief of Staff to President Jorge Sampaio, for whom he had previously worked as Diplomatic Adviser from 1996 to 1999. He was Ambassador to Israel from 1999 to 2001.
Between 1994 and 1999 Mr. Cabral headed the Office of the Director-General for Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while serving also as Portugal’s representative in the Working Group for the former Yugoslavia at the European Union. From 1982 to 1991, he held diplomatic assignments in Ottawa, Rabat, Riyadh and Brussels.
Mr. Cabral joined the Portuguese diplomatic service in 1979, having previously been assigned to the Office of the President during the tenure of President António Ramalho Eanes, and to the Office of the Secretary of State for External Cooperation.
Born on 6 December 1950, he graduated with a degree in political and diplomatic science from the University of Brussels. He is married to Lydia Reinhold and they have three grown-up children.
