New permanent representative of ITALY presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations, Giulio Maria Terzi di Sant’Agata, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Terzi served in the Foreign Ministry in Rome since 2004 as Deputy Secretary-General, Director-General for Multilateral Political Affairs and Human Rights, and Political Director.

Mr. Terzi was Italy’s Ambassador to Israel from 2002 to 2004.  He was Head of coordination in the Department of the General Secretariat in the Foreign Affairs Ministry, beginning in 2000, after serving as Head of the Secretary General’s office in 1999.

From 1993 to 1998, he served in Italy’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as First Counsellor for Political Affairs and later as Minister Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative.

He was appointed in 1990 as First Counsellor to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels, where he served for three years.  In 1987, he served first in the Department for Economic Affairs and later as Head of one of the Offices of the Department of Personnel and Human Resources in the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Mr. Terzi joined the Italian Diplomatic Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a protocol officer in 1973, following two years of military service.  In 1975, he was posted as First Secretary for political affairs at the Italian Embassy in Paris.  He returned to Rome in 1978 as Special Assistant to the Secretary-General and later served for almost five years in Ottawa, Canada, as Economic and Commercial Counsellor, from 1980 to 1984, during a period of sharp growth in economic and technological cooperation between Italy and Canada.  He was Consul General in Vancouver from 1984 to 1987, including during Expo 86.

Mr. Terzi received his law degree in 1970 from the University of Milan.

He was born in Bergamo on 9 June 1946.
