New Permanent Representative of Maldives Presents Credentials

Ahmed Khaleel, the new Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Khaleel was Chargé d’Affaires at his country’s Embassy in Tokyo, Japan (since December 2006).  For 12 years before that, he served in positions of increasing responsibility at the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations in New York, where he started as First Secretary in August 1994 and became Deputy Permanent Representative in April 2006.

Having started his career as a Secretary at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in December 1980 and moved on to the position of Third Secretary at the High Commission of Maldives in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in July 1981, Mr. Khaleel had his first tour of duty at the Permanent Mission in New York as a Third Secretary from September 1984 to April 1988.  He then returned to New York as a Second Secretary in July 1990 and stayed in that position until October 1991.  Over the years, he has also served as a Secretary at the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives (1984); Senior Secretary at the Department of External Resources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1988-1990); and Deputy Director of the Protocol Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from July 1992 to October 1993.

Mr. Khaleel attended a Male Majeediyya School in Maldives from 1970 to 1980 and then went through a Foreign Service Training Programme in Islamabad, Pakistan, from October 1983 to June 1984.  He also attended the Oxford University Foreign Service Programme in the United Kingdom, from October 1991 to June 1992, and studied Japanese at the Japan Foundation in Kita Urawa, Japan, from October 1993 to June 1994.

Born on 17 March 1962, Mr. Khaleel is married, with one child.
