EXPERTS TO DISCUSS PROGRESS OF YOUTH IN GLOBAL ECONOMY

AT HEADQUARTERS MEETING, 30 - 31 MAY

NEW YORK, 29 May (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) -- Experts in the field of youth, representatives of United Nations system organizations and non-governmental organizations, and young people will meet at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 30 to 31 May to discuss setting goals and targets to monitor the progress of youth in the global economy.

In February, the Commission for Social Development requested the Secretary-General, in consultation with organizations, programmes and specialized agencies of the United Nations system, to identify goals and targets regarding the World Programme of Action for Youth’s cluster -- “Youth and the Global Economy” -- which covers the areas of globalization, employment, education and hunger and poverty.

The World Programme of Action for Youth was adopted by the United Nations in 1995 as recognition of the importance of youth participation and development for economic growth and social transformation.  The Programme of Action provides a policy framework and practical guidelines for national and international support to promote the improved well-being and livelihood of youth around the world.

The conclusions of the meeting will be part of a report of the Secretary-General to the sixty-second session of the General Assembly, later this year.

Prior to the expert group meeting, on 29 May, a preparatory youth forum will be held for young people representing international youth non-governmental organizations.
