Forty-fifth Session
13th Meeting (AM)
GROUP OF 77 SUBMITS TEXT ON SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR AFRICA’S
DEVELOPMENT AS COMMISSION PREPARES TO CONCLUDE FORTY-FIFTH SESSION
Before the Commission for Social Development went into informal consultations this morning to consider the outcome of its forty-fifth session, the “Group of 77” developing countries and China introduced a draft resolution on the social dimensions of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).
Pakistan’s representative submitted the text (document E/CN.5/2007/L.3) on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, saying that, while largely based on last year’s resolution, it reflected some recent developments and advances in Africa as well as initiatives undertaken by the wider international community with respect to the region. Specifically, the draft resolution would note the countries that were implementing the NEPAD-required African Peer Review Mechanism and include reference to the African Union’s recognition that the continent required a unified social development policy.
Commission Chairman Mehdi Danesh-Yazdi ( Iran) said a draft resolution on youth and modalities for the first review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing would be presented tomorrow at the concluding meeting of the session, when the Commission would take action on all outstanding texts.
Following the conclusion, the Commission will convene the first meeting of the forty-sixth session to elect the Chairperson and other members of its Bureau.
