SECRETARY-GENERAL PRAISES ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY’S DEDICATION, COMMITMENT

TO PROMOTING ‘ATOMS FOR PEACE’, AS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY MARKED

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

As the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) marks its fiftieth anniversary on 29 July 2007, the Secretary-General wishes to express his appreciation to the Agency for its dedication and commitment to the promotion of “atoms for peace” through its activities within the framework of the three pillars of safety and security; science and technology; and safeguards and verification.

Throughout the past 50 years, the IAEA has strived to expand and enlarge its contributions to nuclear safety and security, nuclear non-proliferation and development. The 2005 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Agency and its Director-General, Mohamed ElBaradei, in recognition of their tireless efforts towards these goals.

The Secretary-General commends the outstanding services of the IAEA and its staff, and wishes the Agency every success in its mission in the years ahead.
