SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JADRANKA MIHALIC DIRECTOR


OF UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION CENTRE IN MEXICO CITY

 


Jadranka Mihalic has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Mexico City.  She will take up her duties on 2 January 2008.


Ms. Mihalic, a national of Croatia, has served as the Chief of the Programme Support Section in the Information Centres Service of the Department of Public Information since 2001.  She recently completed a mission assignment as Chief of the Office of Communications and Public Information for the United Nations Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT), from April to November 2007.


Between September 1991 and December 2001, Ms. Mihalic worked as Chief of the Committee Liaison Unit of the Department of Public Information, serving as Deputy Secretary of the Committee on Information.  She was the Spokesman for the President of the General Assembly, Didier Opertti Badan, Foreign Minister of Uruguay, from September 1997 until September 1998.  From August 1981 to August 1991, she worked as a Political Affairs Officer in the United Nations Centre against Apartheid and Secretary of the Committee of Trustees of the Trust Fund for South Africa and of the Advisory Committee on the Educational and Training Programme for Southern Africa.


Her earlier experience includes work as Special Assistant to the Permanent Representative of Malta, as a reporter for the Inter Press Service at its United Nations bureau, and as a Public Information Assistant at the United Nations.


Ms. Mihalic has a Master of International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, specializing in international law and organization, as well as a degree in history and Italian language and literature from the University of Zagreb, Croatia.
