SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS JAN BEAGLE OF NEW ZEALAND to be

 

DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS GENEVA OFFICE

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Jan Beagle of New Zealand as Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva as part of his effort to strengthen the overall management capacity and coordination among the organizations of the Secretariat in Geneva, to address current managerial challenges, and to enhance the role of the United Nations in Geneva in advancing system-wide coherence.

Ms. Beagle has more than 30 years of experience in the United Nations in the political, development, management, administrative, and inter-agency areas of the Organization’s work.  She has served as the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management since October 2005.  In this capacity, she led the development of the comprehensive human resources management reform strategy in “Investing in People”.

Previously, she served in senior positions in the Office of Human Resources Management, the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, the Office of the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management and the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs.

In all these positions, she has made an important contribution to advancing change management initiatives in the Secretariat and at the level of the United Nations system.

Before joining the United Nations in 1979, Ms. Beagle served in her country’s diplomatic service, including five years as a delegate of New Zealand to the United Nations.  Ms. Beagle has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history and international relations from the University of Auckland.  She is married with three daughters.
