SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS IAN MARTIN AS HIS SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE
AND HEAD OF UNITED NATIONS POLITICAL MISSION IN NEPAL
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has decided to appoint Ian Martin ( United Kingdom) as his Special Representative in Nepal and Head of the United Nations Political Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).
Mr. Martin has been serving as the Secretary-General’s Personal Representative in Nepal since August 2006 and Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal since May 2005. He also undertook a troubleshooting assignment as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Timor-Leste, where he had previously served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the East Timor Popular Consultation in 1999. He has also served in peacekeeping or human rights missions in Haiti, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ethiopia/Eritrea. He was Secretary-General of Amnesty International from 1986 to 1992.
