SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS DAVID LAZARUS DIRECTOR

 

OF United Nations INFORMATION CENTRE IN JAKARTA

 


David Lazarus has been appointed Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Jakarta.  He took up his duties on 11 January 2007.


Mr. Lazarus, a national of Malaysia, has had a distinguished career in the field of public information and communication.  Since 1998, he has been Chief of the United Nations Information Service (UNIS)in Bangkok, which serves the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(UNESCAP), as well as the information centre for Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Singapore and Viet Nam.  Prior to being posted to Bangkok, he worked for the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi as Coordinator of Programme Communications.


Before joining the United Nations in 1989, Mr. Lazarus worked as an editor and journalist for a variety of publications around the world.  He has lectured in journalism, as well as edited handbooks in environmental information, produced films on human rights, and is also the author of two books.


Mr. Lazarus has a master’s degree in mass communications from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.
