SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON SITUATION IN BURUNDI

 

The following Security Council press statement on Burundi was delivered today by Council President Marty Natalegawa ( Indonesia):

Members of the Security Council were briefed by the Facilitator of the Burundi Peace Process, Charles Nqakula, Minister for Safety and Security of South Africa.

Members of the Security Council welcomed the briefing by the Facilitator, Mr. Nqakula.  They commended the role played by the Facilitator, the Regional Initiative, the African Union and the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) in support of the Burundi peace process.  They also noted with appreciation the role of the Peacebuilding Commission in helping Burundi to achieve long-term peace and stability.

Members of the Security Council expressed support for the work of the Facilitator.  They urged the Palipehutu-FNL to return to the Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JVMM) without delay or preconditions, and called on both parties to refrain from any action that might lead to a resumption of hostilities.

Members of the Security Council welcomed the Government’s efforts to promote dialogue, national reconciliation and social harmony in Burundi, and called on all political stakeholders there to maintain the spirit of consensus-building and inclusiveness that had enabled them to achieve a successful transition in their country.
