SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON SITUATION IN NORTHERN UGANDA

 

The following Security Council press statement on the security and humanitarian situation in northern Uganda was delivered today by the Council President, Marty Natalegawa ( Indonesia):

Security Council members received a briefing from former President Joaquin Chissano of Mozambique, the Secretary-General's Special Envoy, on the Juba peace process.  Council members were encouraged by the progress to date, and the resulting improved security and humanitarian situation in northern Uganda.  Security Council members reiterated their support for a negotiated settlement and their hope for an expeditious conclusion to the peace process.

Security Council members stressed the importance of the international community and the Government of Uganda maximising the opportunity provided by the peace process to make further sustained progress on improving the living conditions in northern Uganda.  Security Council members also reiterated that those responsible for serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law must be brought to justice.

The Security Council members again urged the Lord’s Resistance Army to release immediately all women, children and other non-combatants.

Security Council members emphasised the Council's continued strong support for the facilitation role played by Special Envoy Chissano and expressed their hope that this would continue.
