CHAIRMAN OF SECURITY COUNCIL’S AL-QAIDA, TALIBAN SANCTIONS

 

COMMITTEE VISITS HORN OF AFRICA

 

During an informal Committee meeting, held on 23 July 2007, the Chairman of the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee, H.E. Ambassador Johan Verbeke (Belgium), presented his report on his visit to selected States undertaken pursuant to paragraph 30 of Security Council resolution 1735 (2006) between 30 June and 7 July 2007.  The purpose of the trip was to enhance the implementation of the Security Council sanctions measures, namely the assets freeze, the travel ban and the arms embargo, as outlined in paragraph 1 of resolution 1735 (2006).

Accompanied by members of the Committee from Peru and the Republic of Congo, and by the Coordinator of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, the Chairman visited Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya.  In the visited countries, the Chairman and his delegation met with Heads of Government, ministers of foreign affairs, justice and finance, as well as other senior Government officials relevant to the work of the Committee.

In all the visited countries, the Chairman relayed the Committee’s appreciation of efforts undertaken to implement the sanctions measures.  He also emphasized the need for Member States to continue to submit the names of individuals and entities associated with Al-Qaida or the Taliban to the Committee, in accordance with resolution 1735 (2006), in order to improve the quality of the Committee’s Consolidated List of individuals and entities under sanctions.

After his presentation of the trip report, the Committee expressed its high appreciation of the Chairman’s work and urged him to undertake further visits to selected States.
