cartoon exhibit to mark human rights day opens at Un headquarters, 10 december

 

In commemoration of Human Rights Day, an exhibition entitled “Sketching Human Rights” will open in the Main Gallery of the Visitors’ Lobby on Monday, 10 December 2007, at 5 p.m.

The Deputy Secretary-General, Asha-Rose Migiro, will formally open the exhibit.  Statements will also be made by Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information; Craig Mokhiber, Office of the United NationsHigh Commissioner for Human Rights; and Jerry Robinson, CartoonArts International.

The exhibit features a collection of thought-provoking cartoons from a range of international cartoonists on the subject of human rights that will be on display through mid-January 2008.  This cartoon exhibition is curated by the award-winning political cartoonist and comics historian Jerry Robinson, the founding President of CartoonArts International (CAI) and a recipient of the National Cartoonists Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

This year, Human Rights Day will see the launch of a year-long commemoration leading up to the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  The theme for both the day and the year, summarizing the very essence of the Declaration, is “Dignity and justice for all of us”.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Department of Public Information and the Office of the United NationsHigh Commissioner for Human Rights.
