Advertising agencies from Belgium, China, India, Philippines and the United Kingdom will be honoured for public service advertising on Thursday, 14 June, when the UNDPI awards are presented at the New York Festivals 2007 International Advertising Awards at Metropolitan Pavilion, New York City.

Kiyo Akasaka, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will present the awards.

Jointly sponsored by the United Nations Department of Public Information and the New York Festivals, the awards were established in 1990 to honour advertising that best exemplifies the ideals and goals of the United Nations.  This year’s panel of judges reviewed more than a hundred television, radio and print submissions on United Nations-related themes such as peace and security, climate change and racial prejudice.  They then selected the top four to receive the UNDPI awards.

This year’s UNDPI Gold Award goes to Leo Burnett Belgium for a print campaign, “Car, Fridge, Washing Machine, Radiator”, produced for the Belgian Environmental Division on the subject of energy conservation.  The Silver Award goes to Leo Burnett India for “The Tip”, a television spot about child prostitution produced for Prerana, a non-governmental organization working to prevent child abuse.  Two Bronze Awards go to Y & R Philippines for “Bullets/Warship/Cross”, a print campaign produced for Soroptimist International Malaysia, in which a historical timeline contrasts life-threatening devices invented by men with life-saving devices invented by women; and Viking FM of the United Kingdom for a radio spot on hate crime, produced for the City of Hull.

In addition, the United Nations recognizes the following finalists:  Duval Guillaume of Belgium; HangTang Communication Group of China; Jimenez Basic Advertising of the Philippines; and Clemenger BBDO of New Zealand.

The New York Festivals, founded in 1957, oversees six international awards competitions, in film and video, television programming and promotions, radio programming and promotions, television and radio advertising, design and print advertising, and interactive media.
