PHOTO EXHIBIT ON WOMEN ON DISPLAY AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS

 

A photographic exhibition entitled “I Am Powerful:  A Celebration of Women’s Potential” will formally be launched in a private reception on Tuesday, 6 March, at 6 p.m. in the North-East Gallery of the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby.  It will remain on display until the end of March.

The exhibit, sponsored by CARE, the international humanitarian and development organization, and the Hewlett-Packard Company, is comprised of more than 50 images of women in the developing world taking part in CARE’s poverty-fighting work.  The exhibit is an extension of the CARE and HP partnership which began in the summer of 2006 with a global photography programme in which HP and CARE sent five photographic teams, each composed of one renowned photographer and an advanced photography student, to travel to different regions of the world to expose the groundbreaking work of CARE’s “I Am Powerful” campaign.  The images taken during the expeditions are featured in the “I Am Powerful” exhibit.

Also featured in the exhibit is “Women Empowered”, an exhibition and book by internationally acclaimed photographer Phil Borges, who began documenting CARE’s humanitarian work in 2004 and participated in the photo shoot for the HP and CARE programme.

The exhibition concurs with the ongoing fifty-first Commission on the Status of Women, held from 26 February to 9 March at the United Nations to discuss the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against the girl child.
