DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION ADMITS 19 NON-GOVERNMENTAL

ORGANIZATIONS TO ROSTER, DISASSOCIATES 24

The United Nations Department of Public Information’s Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations held the first of its biannual meetings on 20 July.  Nineteen new non-governmental organizations were admitted to its roster, bringing the number of those that work with the Department in the area of communications and information outreach to 1,624.

The Department, together with the Economic and Social Council, is a key focal point in the United Nations Secretariat for non-governmental organizations wishing to work with the Organization.

As noted by the Committee, the newly associated non-governmental organizations represented seven regions of the world:  Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Middle East, Western Europe, North America and Latin America.  All of them conform to the principles of the United Nations Charter and fulfil the Department of Public Information criteria of association.  In addition, they operate solely on a not-for-profit basis and are involved in United Nations areas of interest. Some of these include human rights, democratic values, genocide prevention, social development, refugee protection, environment, youth, HIV/Aids and the Millennium Development Goals.
