GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT STRONGLY CONDEMNS ALGIERS BOMB ATTACKS

 

The following statement on the terrorist bombings in Algeria was issued today by the Spokesperson for General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim:

The President of the General Assembly condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s terrorist bomb attacks in Algeria, which killed numerous people and injured many more, including United Nations staff members.  The President is deeply saddened and outraged over the loss of life and expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this cowardly act and to the President and Government of Algeria.  He reiterates that terrorism is unacceptable in all its forms and manifestations, committed by whomever, wherever and for whatever purposes.

The President expresses his grave concern that once again United Nations offices and staff were deliberate targets of terrorist attacks.  This clearly demonstrates that terrorism is a continuous and global challenge that knows no boundaries.  All peoples, nations and entities are under threat.  The attacks clearly demonstrate that terrorism is not only a threat to the values and principles of the United Nations, but a very concrete threat to its physical existence and actual work on the ground.

The brutal, criminal acts of today should further underscore the determination recently demonstrated by Member States to advance vigorously on the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy that was adopted by the General Assembly.  The President stresses that the Global Strategy demonstrates that the tools are available to us to fight terrorism.  Member States need to muster and maintain the political will to use those tools to prevent such heinous acts.
