Applauding today’s resolution on Korean reunification, assembly President
calls for support of all states in ongoing dialogue
This is the text of a statement of the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim (The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) on the occasion of the Assembly today adopting, without a vote, a resolution on the “peace, security and reunification on the Korean peninsula”:
I welcome the unanimous decision of the United Nations membership to give its full support to the inter-Korean peace process by adopting today without a vote the resolution on “peace, security and reunification on the Korean peninsula”. This resolution by the General Assembly is also a clear recognition of the efforts of the people and leaders of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea to pursue through dialogue and peaceful means reconciliation between their two countries. I commend the two countries for their active contribution to promoting regional peace and stability.
Through this resolution the General Assembly gives further encouragement to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea to implement fully and in good faith the Declaration on the Advancement of North-South Korean Relations, Peace and Prosperity, which was adopted on 4 October 2007.
In the words and spirit of the resolution, I call on all Member States to continue to support and assist, as appropriate, the process of inter-Korean dialogue, reconciliation and reunification so that it may contribute to peace and security not only on the Korean peninsula but also in North-East Asia and the world as a whole.
