SPECIAL MEETING, OTHER EVENTS PLANNED AT HEADQUARTERS TO OBSERVE INTERNATIONAL DAY


OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE, 29 NOVEMBER

 


The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will hold a special meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, 29 November 2007, as mandated by General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977.


Invitations to address the annual meeting have been extended to the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, a representative of Palestine, the Chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, several intergovernmental organizations, and a representative of civil society.


All Member States and Observers have been invited to attend the special meeting.  United Nations family organizations, intergovernmental and civil society organizations have also been invited.  The proceedings, including the texts of messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people received in connection with the observance of the Day, will be published in a special bulletin of the Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat.


On the occasion of the observance, the Committee has arranged for the screening of a film entitled Knowledge is the Beginning:  Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium at 1 p.m.


Also, the Committee, in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations, is presenting a Palestinian cultural exhibit entitled “ Palestine:  A Continuing Legacy”.  An opening ceremony for the exhibit will take place at 6 p.m. on 29 November at the north-east corner of the public lobby of the General Assembly Building.  At the ceremony, remarks will be made by Paul Badji (Senegal), Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People; Yasser Abed Rabbo, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization; and Hanan Munayyer of the Palestinian Heritage Foundation, curator of the exhibit.


The opening ceremony will be followed by a performance by a group of Palestinian musicians, Simon Shaheen and Qantara, at 7 p.m. in Conference Room 4, sponsored by the Committee.
