SECOND COMMITTEE ELECTS BUREAU FOR SIXTY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) today elected its officers for the General Assembly’s upcoming sixty-second session, set to open in mid-September.

With outgoing Committee Chair Tiina Intelmann (Estonia) presiding over this afternoon’s brief meeting, the Committee elected, by acclamation, its new four-member Bureau: Vice-Chairpersons Peter Le Roux (South Africa), Hassan Ali Saleh (Lebanon) and Melanie Santizo Sandoval (Guatemala); and Rapporteur Tamar Tchitanava (Georgia).

The candidates were endorsed by their respective regional groups and, in accordance with the Assembly’s rules of procedure, elected on the basis of equitable geographical distribution, experience and personal competence.

Traditionally, the Second Committee deals with issues relating to economic growth and development, such as macroeconomic policy questions (including international trade, debt and commodities), financing for development, sustainable development and poverty eradication, among other topics.

The Committee’s new Chairperson -- Kirsti Lintonen ( Finland) -– was elected on 24 May along with the Chairs and Bureau members of the other General Assembly’s Main Committees.  On the same day, the Assembly elected, by acclamation, Srgjan Kerim of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as President of its sixty-second session.
