Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Jerman, the new Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Al Jerman served as Assistant Under-Secretary for Specialized Affairs at his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs from July 2004, and supervised five departments, including legal and information affairs.  For two years before that, he was Head of the Standing Committee for Legal Affairs at the League of Arab States -- a position, to which he was appointed in October 2001.

Having joined the United Arab Emirates Diplomatic and Consular Service, General Department of Political Affairs, in 1975, Mr. Al Jerman held increasingly responsible positions in his country’s Foreign Ministry over the years, serving in Algeria, France and at Abu Dhabi Headquarters, where he became the Director of the Department of Legal Affairs and Studies in 1994 and was promoted to the rank of Ambassador in 1999.  The same year, he became a Member of the National Committee for Chemical Weapons.

Mr. Al Jerman received a bachelor’s degree in law from Cairo University in 1979.

Born in Ajman in 1950, he is married, with two children.
