Biographical Note
New permanent representative of malta presents credentials

Saviour F. Borg, the new Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Prior to his current appointment, since July 2003, Mr. Borg served as Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, its specialized agencies and other international organizations in Geneva, and from 1999 to 2003, as his country’s Ambassador to China, Japan, Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Mr. Borg joined the Maltese Civil Service in 1965, serving in the ministries of health, agriculture and fisheries prior to joining the country’s foreign service in 1977. He served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from 1978 to 1987. In 1988, he was appointed as Head and in 1992 Director of the United Nations, International Organizations and Commonwealth Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In February 1994, he was appointed Director of the Multilateral Affairs Department. In January 1997, he became Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna, serving concurrently as his country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, the Organization on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at The Hague, and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty Organization and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.
Mr. Borg represented Malta at numerous international conferences and meetings and served on a number of Maltese national committees and bodies, including the Marine Sciences Network, the International Relations Network of the Malta Council for Science and Technology, and the Task Team on the Impact of Climate Change on Malta. He is the author of many publications and has submitted and presented papers at the University of Southern California, Long Island University in New York and the University of Malta, as well as the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies in Malta and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.
Mr. Borg received his higher education at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and the University of Malta. He holds a Certificate in the Spanish Language from the Ciruculo Cultural, Hispano-Maltes, as well as a MPhil Degree and Certificate in Diplomacy from the University of Malta.
Born in Mosta, Malta, on 12 August 1945, Mr. Borg is married, with three children.
