Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FRANCE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Jean-Maurice Ripert, the new Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, since 2005, Mr. Ripert was his country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva.  From 2003 to 2005, he served as Director of the United Nations and International Organizations desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, and from 2000 to 2003, as his country’s Ambassador to Greece.

Mr. Ripert was Diplomatic Adviser to the Prime Minister of France from 1997 to 2000 and Deputy Director of the United Nations and International Organizations desk a the Foreign Affairs Ministry from 1996 to 1997.  He was Consul General in Los Angeles, United States from 1993 to 1996.  Mr. Ripert was Adviser to the Minister for Health and Humanitarian Action from 1992 to 1993 and, for one year before that, in 1991, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Humanitarian Action.  Also that year, he served as Diplomatic Adviser to the Prime Minister and on his staff as Technical Adviser from 1998 to 1990.  Mr. Ripert was Second Counsellor at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. from 1986 to 1988.

Starting his career in the service of his country in 1980, Mr. Ripert worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate for Legal Affairs until 1982 and in its Directorate for Economic and Financial affairs until 1983.  He served as Technical Adviser on the staffs of the Minister for Cooperation and Development (April 1983-January 1984), the Minister for European Affairs (February-November 1984) and the Minister for Foreign Affairs (December 1984-1986).

Mr. Ripert is a graduate of the National School of Administration (1980) and the Institute of Political Studies (1973).

Born in 1953, he is married with one child.
