ACTIVITIES OF SECRETARY-GENERAL IN WASHINGTON, D.C., 15 DECEMBER

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan travelled to Washington, D.C., on Friday morning, 15 December, where he attended a farewell luncheon held in his honour, hosted by United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the State Department.

He was accompanied by his Under-Secretaries-General for Peacekeeping and for Political Affairs, Jean-Marie Guéhenno and Ibrahim Gambari, and by Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Planning, Robert Orr.

Joining Secretary Rice at the lunch were Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Nicholas Burns; Deputy Permanent Representative in the United States Mission to the United Nations, Alejandro Wolff; and Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, Kristen Silverberg.

Before returning to New York that afternoon, Mr. Annan stopped at the United Nations Information Centre in Washington to bid farewell to the staff there.
