SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS LIEUTENANT GENERAL JOSÉ ELITO SIQUEIRA CARVALHO
NEW FORCE COMMANDER OF UN MISSION IN HAITI
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Lieutenant General José Elito Siqueira Carvalho from Brazil as Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
Since 2004, Lieutenant General Siqueira has served as Commander of the 6th Military Region, where he has been in charge of coordinating and preparing all military units in the area. Previously, Lieutenant General Siqueira had served as Director of Human Resources of the Army from 2002 to 2004, as well as Commander of the Brazilian Army Aviation from 2000 to 2002 and Commander of the 16th Jungle Infantry Brigade from 1999 to 2000.
Lieutenant General Siqueira joined the Brazilian Army in 1966. During the course of his career he has been awarded several medals and decorations both in Brazil and abroad.
Lieutenant General Siqueira, who was born in 1946, holds a PhD in Military Sciences from the Command and Staff College ( Brazil), as well as Masters Degrees from the Army Staff College in Camberley ( United Kingdom) and the Advanced Officer School ( Brazil).
