SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS SHOLA OMOREGIE OF NIGERIA

AS HIS REPRESENTATIVE IN GUINEA-BISSAU

 

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Shola Omoregie ( Nigeria) as his Representative in Guinea-Bissau and Head of the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNOGBIS).

Mr. Omoregie was born in Benin City, Nigeria, on 12 December 1946.  He studied at the University of Lagos where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1972, and took subsidiary courses in General African Studies and Sociology.  Mr. Omoregie has passed the Nigerian National Civil Service examination in Law and Public Administration, and underwent advanced diplomatic induction training in diplomacy, international relations and international law.

After serving in the Foreign Service from 1972 to 1978, Mr. Omoregie joined the United Nations system in 1978 as the first Resident Representative of the United Nations Commissioner for Namibia in Botswana.  Since then, he has served as Head of Unit for Information and Assistance in the Office of the Commissioner for Namibia (1983-1988); Representative of the United Nations Commissioner for Namibia in Angola (1988-1990); Head of the Unit for Research and Reports in the same Office and Head of the Task Force for Angola and South Africa (1990-1991); Secretary of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (1992-1994); United Nations observer during the first multiparty and democratic elections in South Africa (1994); Secretary of two of the subsidiary organs of the Security Council (1992-1995); Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Security Council Secretariat Branch/Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political Affairs (1995-2005); and member of the United Nations Task Force on Assistance to the African Union (2003-2005).

Prior to his appointment as Representative of the Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau and Head of UNOGBIS, Mr. Omoregie was Chief of Branch of the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch in the Security Council Affairs Division of the Department of Political Affairs.
