‘UNITING THE WORLD AGAINST AIDS’ EXHIBITION OPENS AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS

A joint exhibition entitled “Uniting the World Against AIDS” will be on display in the South Gallery of the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby from 31 May to 20 June.  The exhibit coincides with the High-Level Meeting on AIDS taking place at Headquarters from 31 May to 2 June, and is comprised of four parts.

“Living with HIV” features photographs from Kenya, Rwanda and the United Republic of Tanzania by Jonathan Torgovnik, photojournalist and contract photographer for Newsweek magazine, with text by Geoffrey Cowley, Newsweek’s senior editor for health and medicine.  The collection of images and articles are featured in Newsweek’s “25 Years of AIDS” issue.

The “AIDS Memorial Quilt” is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and the largest ongoing community arts project in the world.  Each block of the quilt memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS.  As the epidemic continues claiming lives around the world, the Quilt continues to grow and reach more communities with its messages of remembrance, awareness and hope.

“AIDS Epidemic Update” consists of maps and statistics of the current status of the worldwide AIDS epidemic.

“Keep the Promise” is a collection of letters from young people from around the globe asking their Government leaders to do something more to fight the AIDS pandemic.

These exhibits are organized by UNAIDS with the assistance of the United Nations Department of Public Information, Newsweek magazine (New York), The AIDS Memorial Quilt Project (Atlanta, Georgia) and the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance (Geneva, Switzerland).
